In a significant move to strengthen its broadband offerings, state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has entered the 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) segment, launching its home broadband service in Hyderabad.

Currently dominated by private players like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, the 5G FWA space now sees a government-backed entrant with BSNL’s launch of “Quantum 5G FWA”, touted as the first SIM-less, fully indigenous 5G FWA solution developed specifically for BSNL.“

Quantum 5G FWA demonstrates how Indian engineers can create world-class connectivity. This is just a soft launch; we will scale it to more cities and add more features in the coming months,” said BSNL Chairman and Managing Director A. Robert J Ravi at the official launch held on June 18.

According to BSNL, the pilot project will be expanded to Bengaluru, Pondicherry, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Gwalior, and Chandigarh by September 2025.

Pricing and Plans

The introductory broadband plans are priced at:₹999 for speeds up to 100 Mbps

₹1,499 for speeds up to 300 Mbps

What is 5G FWA?

The 5G Fixed Wireless Access technology enables high-speed broadband without the need for traditional optical fibre. A modem is installed outside the user’s premises to wirelessly receive signals directly from the nearest 5G base station simplifying infrastructure needs and expanding connectivity in hard-to-reach areas.

With this move, BSNL aims to offer a competitive alternative to existing broadband services and bring high-speed internet to underserved regions using next-generation wireless technology.
