Father’s Day, celebrated globally to honor the men who have shaped our lives, will be observed this year on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Since 1966, this special day has been marked every year on the third Sunday of June, recognizing the invaluable role fathers and father figures play in our lives.
In India and many parts of the world, Father’s Day is much more than a date on the calendar. It is a heartfelt tribute to dads who serve as protectors, advisors, role models, and friends. From sharing life lessons to offering unwavering support, fathers often form the emotional and moral backbone of families.
Importantly, the day is not limited to celebrating biological fathers. It also honors father figures grandfathers, uncles, mentors, guardians who have filled this crucial role and made significant impacts in people’s lives.
The Origin of Father’s Day
The origins of Father’s Day trace back over a century to the United States. The idea was first proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by the newly recognized Mother’s Day introduced by Anna Jarvis. Wishing to honor her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who single-handedly raised six children, Dodd initially wanted Father’s Day to be celebrated on his birthday, June 5.
However, after initial resistance from the church and community, the date was eventually moved to the third Sunday in June, and the first official celebration took place in 1910 in Spokane, Washington, with local church support.
The observance quickly gained popularity, and by 1916, then US President Woodrow Wilson officially recognized Father’s Day during a visit to Spokane.
Global celebration
While Father’s Day is not a public holiday in every country, it is officially recognized in several nations, including Spain and Lithuania. Across the world, children express their love and appreciation through handmade gifts, greeting cards, and special celebrations that often include family gatherings and unique bonding activities.
As Father’s Day 2025 approaches, it serves as a gentle reminder to cherish and acknowledge the sacrifices, love, and guidance fathers provide throughout our lives.
