Tragedy struck near Mumbai on Monday when at least eight passengers fell off an overcrowded local train between Diva and Mumbra stations in Thane district. Authorities fear that five people may have died in the incident, which occurred on a train bound for Kasara from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

According to officials, overcrowding inside the train forced many passengers to hang by the doors, leading to the fall. At least 10 to 12 people reportedly lost their balance and fell onto the tracks. The incident happened near Mumbra station, prompting an immediate response from railway and police personnel.

The injured have been rushed to Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Rescue operations concluded swiftly, and a formal investigation into the incident has been launched by Indian Railways.

In response to the tragedy, railway authorities have announced immediate safety measures. All rakes currently under production for the Mumbai Suburban network will be equipped with automatic door closure systems. Additionally, plans are in place to retrofit existing rakes with similar door-closing mechanisms.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families. “The death of some passengers in the Diva-Mumbra local train accident is extremely unfortunate. My heartfelt tributes to the deceased. The government stands with their families in this hour of grief. I wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” he said in an official statement.

Railway officials are continuing to assess the cause of the incident, with a full report expected in the coming days.
