Manipur plunged into fresh unrest over the weekend following the reported arrest of a leader from the Meitei organisation Arambai Tenggol. The development triggered widespread protests, leading to arson, road blockades, and the imposition of curfew and internet restrictions across several districts.

Protests Escalate Across Imphal Valley

Violent demonstrations erupted late Saturday night after news broke of the arrest of Kanan Singh, a prominent figure in Arambai Tenggol. While police have yet to officially confirm the identity or charges, the incident sparked immediate unrest, particularly in the Imphal East and West districts.

Protesters took to the streets in areas like Kwakeithel and Uripok, blocking roads and setting tyres and furniture ablaze. In a shocking act of defiance, some demonstrators reportedly doused themselves in petrol, threatening self-immolation.

Bus Torched, Gunfire Reported

Tensions peaked in Khurai Lamlong area of Imphal East, where a bus was set on fire by an agitated mob. Meanwhile, multiple gunshots were heard in Kwakeithel, although authorities have not confirmed the source of the firing.

Imphal Airport Besieged

Demonstrators also converged on the Imphal Tulihal airport, blocking entry and access roads in an attempt to prevent the possible transfer of the arrested leader out of the state. Protesters demanded his immediate release.

Curfew Clamped in Five Districts

In response to the escalating violence, authorities imposed a curfew and restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) across five districts: Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.

In Imphal East, residents have been barred from leaving their homes since 10 PM on Saturday. In Imphal West, public gatherings of more than five people and the carrying of weapons including sticks, stones, or firearms have been strictly prohibited.

Statewide Internet Shutdown

To curb the spread of misinformation and maintain order, internet and mobile data services including VPNs and VSAT have been suspended across the affected districts. Security forces have been deployed at key locations including the Raj Bhavan and other sensitive zones.

A senior police officer confirmed that violent protests followed the arrest and said all “preventive measures are now in place” to restore order.
