Southwest Monsoon Reaches Kerala Ahead of Schedule
The southwest monsoon has officially made its early arrival in India, bringing a wave of relief from the sweltering summer heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed on Saturday that the monsoon has reached Kerala, accompanied by heavy rainfall across the state.
Monsoon Advances by Eight Days
This year, the monsoon has arrived eight days ahead of its usual onset date of 1 June. According to the IMD, this is one of the earliest arrivals in recent history, breaking a 16-year record. The last notably early monsoon was in 2009, when it reached Kerala on 23 May.
Red and Orange Alerts Issued Across Southern India
With the onset of the monsoon, the IMD has issued red alerts for several districts in Kerala, forecasting intense rainfall over the next 24 hours. Parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka are also under red alert, while orange alerts have been issued in surrounding regions. The department warns of strong winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h.
Potential for Early Onset in Other States
Kerala is traditionally the first state to receive the monsoon, setting the pace for its progress across the country. This early arrival has raised expectations of an earlier-than-normal monsoon onset in other Indian states as well.
The IMD continues to monitor the system closely and urges residents in affected areas to stay alert and follow official advisories.
