Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace while asserting the country’s right to defend itself against any aggression. His remarks came as the nation observed Youm-e-Tashakur (Day of Thanks) to honor the armed forces for their response during the recent military standoff with India.
Addressing the nation, PM Sharif said, “Pakistan is a peaceful country, but it reserves the right to give a befitting response in its defence.” He praised the military’s response to Indian strikes, calling it a “golden chapter” in Pakistan’s defence history.
The statement follows a tense four-day exchange of drone and missile strikes between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, which ended with a mutual understanding to de-escalate on May 10.
To pay tribute to the sacrifices made during the confrontation, PM Sharif visited the home of Squadron Leader Usman Yousaf, who lost his life in the conflict. He was accompanied by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Army Chief General Asim Munir, and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.
Meanwhile, Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan also addressed the recent ceasefire, calling it a positive step. “We urge India to faithfully adhere to its implementation,” he said during a weekly briefing.
Khan cautioned that Pakistan remains vigilant. “Should India resume hostilities, Pakistan will have no choice but to respond,” he warned. He also criticized India for allegedly distorting facts and making baseless claims regarding Pakistan’s nuclear program.“
Pakistan remains a responsible state, committed to regional peace and stability,” Khan said, calling on the international community to ensure India abides by its commitments to prevent further escalation.
The recent developments have drawn attention to the fragile peace in South Asia and the importance of diplomatic engagement to avoid further conflict.
