India Never Sought War, Only Wanted to Teach Terrorists a Lesson: Shashi Tharoor on Ceasefire with Pakistan

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan following weeks of heightened military tension triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack. Tharoor emphasized that India never aimed for a prolonged conflict but sought to deliver a strong message to terrorists.“

Peace is essential. I am very glad India never wanted a long-term war. India wanted to teach terrorists a lesson, and I believe that lesson has been taught. The other details are awaited,” said Tharoor.

The ceasefire announcement came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that both nations had agreed to an immediate and comprehensive cessation of hostilities across land, sea, and air. The agreement was reportedly finalized during a call between Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), Major General Kashif Abdullah, and his Indian counterpart, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, on Saturday afternoon.

Diplomatic sources suggest that U.S. pressure on Pakistan played a significant role in de-escalation, with Washington’s support for an upcoming IMF bailout allegedly tied to Islamabad’s cooperation in halting military aggression.

The Indian Armed Forces have confirmed their commitment to the ceasefire. “Whilst we will be adhering to the understanding that has been reached today the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force remain fully prepared and vigilant in defending the sovereignty and integrity of the motherland,” said Commodore Raghu R Nair during a press briefing.

He added, “Every misadventure by Pakistan has been met with strength, and any future escalation will invite a decisive response. We are fully operationally ready to launch any required operations.”

The recent tensions stemmed from the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians. The Resistance Front (TRF), a known affiliate of Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.

In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting alleged terrorist training camps in Pakistan. Pakistan retaliated with a series of drone attacks, which Indian defense forces claimed to have successfully neutralized.

The ceasefire brings a temporary calm to the region, though both sides remain cautious. Further developments and diplomatic engagements are expected in the coming days.
