In a dramatic diplomatic breakthrough, India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire following a tense escalation of hostilities in recent days. The announcement was made by former U.S. President Donald Trump on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday evening, following what he described as a “long night of talks” mediated by the United States.
The ceasefire, which includes land, air, and maritime operations, was confirmed by both New Delhi and Islamabad within minutes of Trump’s statement. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the agreement was finalized during a conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two nations at 3:35 PM IST, and came into effect at 5 PM IST.“
After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence,” Trump posted.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed Trump’s statement on X, confirming that both nations had agreed to halt all military activity and begin broader dialogue. “We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” Rubio said. He also revealed plans for talks on a wide range of issues to be held at a neutral venue.
Following the U.S. announcement, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar officially confirmed the ceasefire, stating that “Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region,” despite recent days of intense cross-border attacks.
India’s confirmation came shortly after, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stating, “The DGMOs of India and Pakistan agreed that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, in the air, and at sea with effect from 1700 hours IST today.” Misri added that further DGMO-level discussions are scheduled for Monday.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also addressed the development, affirming the ceasefire while reaffirming India’s firm stance against terrorism. “India and Pakistan have worked out an understanding to stop military action. However, India’s position on terrorism remains firm and uncompromising,” he posted on X.
The ceasefire brings a sudden halt to days of high alert and cross-border confrontations, offering a hopeful opening for de-escalation and dialogue in the region.
