Tensions escalated along the India-Pakistan border as Pakistan launched a series of missile and drone attacks targeting key military installations across Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur. The Indian Armed Forces swiftly neutralised the threats, preventing any casualties or damage.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the attacks took place overnight between May 7 and 8, with Pakistani-origin drones and missiles attempting to strike multiple military locations including Awantipora, Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, and even as far as Bhuj and Phalodi. India’s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed all incoming threats.

Eight missiles specifically aimed at strategic locations in Jammu including Satwari, Samba, RS Pura, and Arnia were intercepted mid-air by Indian Air Defence Units.
India’s Response: Operation Sindoor
The escalation follows India’s retaliatory operation, codenamed Operation Sindoor, in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which was claimed by The Resistance Force (TRF), a Pakistan-backed terror group. Addressing a special briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri clarified that India’s response was defensive, not provocative.“
Our approach is to avoid escalation. The choice to de-escalate now lies with Pakistan,” said Misri. He also highlighted that at a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, Pakistan attempted to block any mention of TRF’s involvement in the Pahalgam attack despite its public claim of responsibility.
Government Response and Preparedness
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level security meeting, emphasizing heightened alertness, operational readiness, and public communication. The meeting focused on strengthening civil defence, combating misinformation, and safeguarding critical infrastructure.
In view of the heightened security environment, Air India issued a nationwide travel advisory urging passengers to arrive at airports at least three hours before departure. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has also mandated enhanced security checks at all airports.
Misinformation Denied; Schools Closed in J&KThe Press Information Bureau’s fact-check unit refuted viral claims of suicide bombings in Pathankot and Rajouri, confirming them as false. Official sources also denied any tank movements on either side of the border.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir government announced the closure of all educational institutions on May 9 and 10 as a precautionary measure. Education Minister Sakina Itoo confirmed the decision, adding that senior officials have been deployed to border districts to coordinate emergency responses.
India remains on high alert, with the Armed Forces fully prepared to respond to any further provocations.
