The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood has been granted a one-year extension in his tenure, the Centre announced on Wednesday.

Sood, who assumed charge as the CBI chief on May 25, 2023, was initially appointed for a two-year term. With this extension, he will now serve until May 24, 2026.

The decision was made following a meeting of the high-level selection committee held on May 5, 2025. The panel, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, included Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Based on the committee’s recommendation, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the extension.

A 1986-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, Sood previously served as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Karnataka before taking over the reins at the CBI.

Born in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh in 1964, Sood joined the Indian Police Service at the age of 22 after graduating in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. He also holds advanced degrees from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bengaluru and the Maxwell School of Governance at Syracuse University, USA.

Renowned for his proactive leadership, Sood has overseen several high-profile investigations involving prominent individuals and complex cases with both inter-state and international implications.

During his tenure in Karnataka, he championed the modernization of policing systems and worked closely with the judiciary to strengthen platforms like the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS).
