‘Operation Sindoor’: Indian Strikes Kill 14, Including Jaish Chief Masood Azhar’s Family Members

In a major counter terror operation codenamed Operation Sindoor, the Indian armed forces carried out precision strikes on nine terror linked sites across Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), killing 14 individuals closely associated with the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror outfit. Among those killed were 10 family members of JeM chief Masood Azhar and four of his close aides.

The strikes, executed primarily by the Indian Air Force during a series of night raids, targeted key terror infrastructure belonging to banned groups Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The most prominent of these was the Markaz Subhan Allah compound in Bahawalpur, considered the headquarters of JeM.

In a rare public statement, Masood Azhar confirmed the deaths, listing his elder sister and her husband, a nephew and his wife, and a niece among the deceased. Reacting to the strike, Azhar accused Indian leadership of crossing “all limits of cruelty,” warning that “no mercy should be expected now.”

Indian officials confirmed the operation involved coordinated strikes on both sides of the Line of Control. Four of the nine targets were located in Pakistan, and five in PoK. Other key sites hit included:

1. Sarjal in Tehra Kalan

2. Markaz Abbas in Kotli

3. Syedna Bilal Camp in Muzaffarabad (all linked to JeM)

4. Markaz Taiba in Murdike

5. Markaz Ahle Hadith in Barnala

6. Shwawai Nalla Camp in Muzaffarabad (associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba)

7. Makaz Raheel Shahid in Kotli

8. Mehmoona Joya in Sialkot (linked to Hizbul Mujahideen)

The name Operation Sindoor is a symbolic reference to the traditional red vermilion powder worn by married Hindu women. The naming is believed to pay homage to the victims of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. A widely circulated image of a grieving woman beside her husband’s body became a national symbol of the tragedy, prompting widespread outrage and a firm call for retaliation.

This marks one of India’s most extensive cross border anti terror operations in recent years and is expected to draw sharp international attention.
