Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced a major shift in the tech giant’s global supply chain strategy, confirming that the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. during the June quarter will be manufactured in India. This marks a significant milestone in Apple’s ongoing efforts to diversify its production base amid escalating U.S. China trade tensions.
Speaking during Apple’s second-quarter earnings call, Cook said, “For the June quarter, we do expect the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. will have India as their country of origin. Vietnam will be the primary source for iPads, Macs, Apple Watch, and AirPods sold in the U.S.”
However, he clarified that China would continue to play a key role, remaining the main manufacturing hub for Apple products sold outside the United States.

Cook also addressed the financial impact of new tariffs, stating that Apple anticipates around $900 million in related costs this quarter. These tariffs include a 20% levy under the February IEEPA measures for products imported from China, as well as an additional 125% tariff on certain categories introduced in April.
Highlighting the importance of supply chain resilience, Cook said, “What we learned some time ago was that having everything in one location had too much risk with it. We’ve since opened new sources of supply, and that process will continue.”
Despite global uncertainties, Apple posted strong Q2 results, with $95.4 billion in revenue a 5% year on year increase and an 8% rise in diluted earnings per share to $1.65. The company also noted robust growth in its installed base and double digit growth in iPhone upgrades.
India stood out as a top performer among several key markets, alongside the UK, Spain, Brazil, Turkey, and the Philippines. According to India’s IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Apple exported iPhones worth over Rs 1.5 lakh crore from India last fiscal year. Total smartphone exports from India hit over Rs 2 lakh crore in FY25, reflecting a 54% increase from the previous year.
In line with this momentum, Apple plans to expand its retail footprint in India this year, bringing the total number of Apple Stores in the country to four.
