Mehbooba Mufti Urges Caution in Pahalgam Crackdown, Calls for Protection of Civilians

By The Sampadak Express

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has called on the central government to exercise restraint and ensure civilian safety in the aftermath of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

Taking to social media platform X, Mufti expressed grave concerns over reports of mass detentions and demolition drives, cautioning that such actions could further alienate the local population and inadvertently strengthen extremist narratives.“

The Government of India must tread with caution and carefully distinguish between terrorists and civilians following the recent Pahalgam attack,” Mufti posted. “There are reports of thousands being arrested and scores of houses of common Kashmiris being demolished along with those of militants.”

Mufti warned that sweeping and indiscriminate actions risk punishing innocent citizens, many of whom actively oppose terrorism. She emphasized that counter-terror operations must be intelligence-driven, evidence-based, and respectful of human rights.“

Indiscriminate actions against civilians undermine our fight against terrorism,” she said. “Alienation only aids those who thrive on division.”

The PDP chief stressed the importance of transparency, due process, and building trust with the local community. She advocated for precise, intelligence-led operations and rejected the use of collective punishment, warning it could erode public confidence and feed extremist propaganda.“

Justice and trust are the strongest weapons against terrorism,” she added, calling for engagement with local communities to ensure long-term peace and stability in the region.

Her remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Kashmir Valley, where security forces have launched intensified operations following the Pahalgam attack. Reports of widespread detentions and property demolitions have raised fears of a return to heavy-handed policies.

Mufti’s appeal underscores the delicate situation on the ground and the urgent need for a balanced strategy—one that safeguards national security while protecting the rights and dignity of civilians.
