Aligned with NEP 2020, new curriculum structure to roll out from upcoming academic year
In a major step towards implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Maharashtra School Education Department has issued a Government Resolution (GR) mandating Hindi as the third compulsory language in both Marathi and English-medium schools from Classes 1 to 5. The directive will be implemented in a phased manner, beginning with Grade 1 in the upcoming academic year.
Until now, students in Classes 1 to 4 were taught only two languages — Marathi and English — as compulsory subjects. The latest GR, issued on April 16, 2025, outlines that all schools, including Marathi and English medium, will now follow the three-language formula, already in practice across other mediums in the state.
The move is part of a broader overhaul in line with the NEP 2020, which introduces a new 5+3+3+4 school education structure. This structure includes:
Foundational Stage: 3 years of pre-primary + Grades 1 & 2
Preparatory Stage: Grades 3 to 5Middle Stage: Grades 6 to 8
Secondary Stage: Grades 9 to 12
Under the revised framework, the State Board syllabus will be aligned with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) while incorporating Maharashtra’s local context in subjects like History, Geography, and languages.
The GR emphasizes that the transformation in the education system — from foundational learning to higher education — will be driven by the five guiding principles of the NEP: inclusiveness, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability.
The phased rollout aims to ensure a smooth transition for schools, teachers, and students, setting a strong foundation for multilingual learning and holistic development.
