In a major political development ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) have announced a renewed alliance to contest the polls together. The announcement was made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Chennai on Friday.

Addressing a gathering, Shah stated that details regarding seat sharing and ministerial positions will be finalized at a later stage. He also emphasized that the BJP will not interfere in the internal affairs of the AIADMK and that there were no pre-conditions for the alliance.”

In Tamil Nadu, the DMK is bringing up issues like Sanatan Dharma, NEET, and the three-language policy to distract from real governance failures,” Shah said, sharply criticizing the ruling DMK government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin.

He acknowledged that while the BJP and AIADMK may differ in their stance on certain issues like NEET and language policy, the alliance partners will work together on a common minimum programme for the state.

In a related development, the BJP has appointed Nainar Nagendran as its new Tamil Nadu state president. A former AIADMK leader who joined the BJP in 2017, Nagendran replaces former IPS officer K. Annamalai as the party’s 13th state president. He was the sole nominee for the post, according to party sources.

Nagendran’s appointment comes at a crucial time as the BJP aims to expand its footprint in a state where Dravidian parties have long dominated the political landscape. His leadership will be pivotal as the BJP heads into a high-stakes election in alliance with his former party.

The renewed BJP-AIADMK alliance marks a significant reshaping of political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, setting the stage for a closely watched battle in 2026.
