The crescent moon marking the start of Eid-ul-Fitr has been officially sighted in India, confirming that the joyous celebrations will take place on Monday, March 31, 2025. This marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, which began on March 2, 2025.
Khalid Rashid Farangi, Chairman of the Central Moon Sighting Committee, confirmed the moon’s sighting on Sunday evening and announced that Eid will be celebrated across India on March 31. “The moon has been sighted today, March 30, and Eid will be celebrated tomorrow, March 31. Namaz will be offered at 10 am in Lucknow Eidgah,” he stated.
The moon sighting was also verified by the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee in Kolkata, a prominent authority in West Bengal, adding to the confirmation of Eid celebrations across the country. In Hyderabad, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Sadar Majlis-e-Ulama-e-Deccan is finalizing the moon sighting based on local testimonies.
In the Middle East, Eid celebrations commenced a day earlier, as Saudi Arabia and other parts of the UAE declared Sunday, March 30, as the first day of Eid-ul-Fitr after the crescent moon was sighted late on Saturday.
Eid-ul-Fitr, which signifies the end of fasting during Ramadan and marks the beginning of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is celebrated worldwide with prayers, charity, and community gatherings.
In India, major cities including New Delhi, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Noida, Kolkata, Chennai, Patna, and Mumbai witnessed the appearance of the crescent moon on Sunday evening, ensuring a nationwide celebration. Muslims across the country will gather for prayers and festivities on March 31, bringing the sacred month of Ramadan to a close.
