In a dramatic turn of events, members of the Karni Sena, a caste-centric group, attempted to storm the Agra residence of Samajwadi Party (SP) Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman on Wednesday morning (March 26, 2025). The protest was sparked by his controversial remarks regarding the 16th-century Rajput ruler, Rana Sanga, which led to violent clashes and widespread vandalism.
A group of dozens of Karni Sena activists gathered outside the MP’s residence near Hariparvat Chauraha, where they caused significant damage. The protestors broke windows, damaged parked cars, and destroyed chairs outside the house. Some arrived on a bulldozer, further escalating the situation. The police intervened and used mild force to control the situation, with both policemen and protestors sustaining minor injuries. The chaotic scenes, showing broken furniture and shattered glass, quickly went viral on social media.
The MP’s family alleged that the assailants were armed with sticks, rods, and swords. Ramji Lal Suman’s son, Ranjit Suman, expressed his concerns to the media, claiming that threats had been made in the days leading up to the incident, but no action had been taken by the authorities. “The administration was aware of the threats, yet no steps were taken. Instead, the attackers were allowed to act with impunity,” he stated.
The controversy stemmed from comments made by Ramji Lal Suman, a Dalit leader in the Rajya Sabha, who had referred to Rana Sanga as a traitor. Suman suggested that if Indian Muslims, who do not consider Babur their idol, are descendants of Babur, then Rajputs must also be descendants of the traitor, Rana Sanga, who invited Babur to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. His remarks have been met with backlash, particularly from Rajput communities.
Vandalism and Police Response
According to Mahadik Akshay Sanjay, an IPS officer at the Hariparvat police station in Agra, several vehicles parked outside the house were damaged, and the glass windows of the residence were shattered. However, no major structural damage occurred. The police are in the process of registering an FIR and assured that strict action would be taken against the culprits. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further disturbances.
Political Reactions
SP President and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav strongly criticized the state government over the violence. He questioned the effectiveness of the Chief Minister’s authority, stating, “When an incident of vandalism outside an MP’s house could not be stopped, even with the Chief Minister in Agra, it raises questions about the government’s control.”
Yadav demanded immediate action and suggested using artificial intelligence to identify the culprits. He also implied that the incident could have occurred with the Chief Minister’s consent, if swift action wasn’t taken.
Defending the MP
Akhilesh Yadav also came to the defense of Ramji Lal Suman, clarifying that the MP’s intent was not to insult Rajput society. He explained that Suman’s comments were aimed at highlighting a one-sided interpretation of history and that there was no intention to disrespect any community. Yadav accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of manipulating historical topics for political gain, dividing the nation along religious and caste lines.“
The Samajwadi Party believes in social justice and aims to create an egalitarian society where even the weakest receive respect. We are not here to insult any historical figure or community,” Yadav stated. He reiterated that the SP’s stance was about promoting an inclusive interpretation of history, rather than using it to further political agendas.
As tensions rise over the remarks and the ensuing protests, both sides continue to assert their positions, leaving the situation hanging in the balance.
