Comedian Kunal Kamra sparked further controversy this week by reposting a video of a parody song aimed at Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. This move comes amid the ongoing backlash following his “traitor” remark directed at Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, which has led to multiple police cases against him.

The reposted video features Kamra performing a parody of the iconic song “Hawa Hawai” from the 1987 film Mr. India. This performance took place during a show at The Habitat in Mumbai, where Kamra has been making waves with his politically charged humor. In the song, he critiques the hardships faced by ordinary citizens due to the taxation system and corporate culture. He also highlights issues such as poor infrastructure, slow development, and the government’s apparent indifference to these concerns.

Kamra’s remarks have sparked significant controversy, especially his use of the term “gaddar” (traitor) while referring to Shinde during a separate performance in Mumbai. The incident led to Shiv Sena workers vandalizing the venue, and the comedian has since been summoned by the Mumbai police for questioning. However, Kamra has requested more time to appear before the investigating officer through his legal counsel.

In addition to reposting the parody targeting Sitharaman, Kamra also shared another parody earlier this week that mocked the Shiv Sena’s protests against him. This second video features a twist on the classic anthem “Hum Honge Kamyaab,” where Kamra humorously sings about his own experiences amid the controversy. The video also includes visuals of Shiv Sena workers vandalizing the venue and burning Kamra’s effigy, while the altered version of the song “Hum Honge Kangaal” (We Will Be Broke) plays in the background.

While the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra has strongly condemned Kamra’s joke about Shinde, the opposition has shown support for the comedian, defending his right to free expression. The growing tensions surrounding Kamra’s performances continue to capture public attention, making it a flashpoint in the ongoing debate over free speech and political satire in India.
