The Centre has announced a significant revision in the salary, pension, and additional pension for Members of Parliament (MPs) and former MPs. The salary of current MPs will see a 24% increase, with the revised figures now effective following a notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs on Monday.

Revised Benefits for MPs:

Salary: The monthly salary of MPs will increase from ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,24,000.

Daily Allowance: The daily allowance has been raised from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.

Pension: The pension for former MPs will rise from ₹25,000 per month to ₹31,000 per month.

Additional Pension: Former MPs will now receive an additional pension of ₹2,500 per year of service beyond five years, an increase from ₹2,000.

These revisions have been made under the Salary, Allowances, and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, based on the Cost Inflation Index outlined in the Income Tax Act of 1961.

Karnataka Government Approves 100% Salary Hike for CM, Ministers, and MLAs

In a related development, the Karnataka government recently approved a 100% salary hike for its Chief Minister, ministers, and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The Chief Minister’s salary will double from ₹75,000 to ₹1.5 lakh per month, while ministers’ salaries will increase by 108%, from ₹60,000 to ₹1.25 lakh per month.

The salary hikes were approved through the Karnataka Ministers’ Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill and the Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions, and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2025. However, the bills were passed amid protests from the opposition BJP, which objected to the 4% reservation for Muslims in public contracts. The amendments were approved without any discussion, creating a chaotic scene in the legislature.

These salary increases come during the second leg of the 2025 budget session.
