In a bid to maintain public order and prevent the spread of rumours, internet services, along with voice-over-internet telephony, have been suspended in five Gram Panchayat areas of Sainthia town in Birbhum district, West Bengal. The suspension, which began on March 14, will remain in effect until March 17.
The order, issued by the Principal Secretary of the Home and Hill Affairs Department, highlights concerns over the potential use of internet services for unlawful activities. Authorities have also deployed additional police forces in the affected areas, following an incident of stone-pelting in the region.
The official notification states that any data-related message, whether from individuals or telecommunication equipment, will be temporarily restricted in the interest of public order and to prevent any incitement to illegal activities. However, the order clarifies that voice calls and SMS services remain unaffected, and no restrictions have been placed on newspapers, ensuring that communication and information dissemination continue without disruption.
The restrictions apply to the following areas within Sainthia town: Hatora Gram Panchayat (GP), Mathpalsa GP, Harisara GP, Dariyapur GP, and Fulur GP. The move comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of internet and voice-over-internet telephony services for spreading rumours and instigating unlawful behaviour.
Authorities have emphasized that these measures are necessary in light of recent events and are part of efforts to maintain peace in the Sainthia Municipality area. The suspension order will remain in force until 8 AM on March 17, 2025.
The government’s decision is aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation and maintaining law and order in the region.
