Survey finds Over 57% of Male Corporates in India face Vitamin B12 Deficiency

By The Sampadak Express

A recent study by MediBuddy, a leading digital healthcare platform, has highlighted a growing health concern among corporate professionals in India. The survey revealed that over 57% of male corporates are suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency, a vital nutrient essential for energy production and brain function.

The study, which analyzed data from 4,400 individuals (3,338 men and 1,059 women) who are urban corporate employees, also found that nearly 50% of women exhibit deficient levels of this crucial vitamin.

Why is Vitamin B12 Deficiency So Prevalent Among Corporate Professionals?

In today’s fast-paced corporate world, work has become the focal point for many, often overshadowing the importance of a balanced diet and proper nutrition. High stress, erratic eating habits, and long working hours contribute significantly to vitamin B12 deficiency. Many professionals overlook their nutritional needs until the symptoms become hard to ignore.

Dietitian Vidhi Chawla, founder of Fisico Diet and Aesthetic Clinic, explains that vitamin B12 is predominantly found in animal products, making vegetarians more susceptible to deficiency. In addition, Dr. Archana Batra, a dietitian and certified diabetes educator, points out that lifestyle habits such as frequent consumption of processed foods, alcohol, and excessive caffeine can hinder the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12.

Moreover, corporate professionals often face heightened stress levels, which lead to increased cortisol production—this hormone can deplete the body’s vitamin B12 reserves.

Early Signs of Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in neurological function and energy metabolism. Its deficiency, however, often goes unnoticed until severe symptoms manifest. Early signs to watch out for include:

1. Persistent fatigue and muscle weakness

2. Tingling sensations in the hands and feet

3. Memory problems and difficulty concentrating

4. Mood swings, irritability, and depression

5. Dizziness and shortness of breath

Often, these symptoms are dismissed as stress-related fatigue, but if they persist, it’s important to consider a possible vitamin B12 deficiency.

The Role of a Sedentary Lifestyle and Work Stress

A desk-bound lifestyle combined with high work stress significantly exacerbates vitamin B12 deficiency. Lack of physical activity leads to a slow metabolism, hindering nutrient absorption. Chronic stress also impacts gut health, further reducing the body’s ability to absorb essential vitamins.

Dr. Batra adds that excessive alcohol consumption and caffeine intake contribute to impaired digestion, further complicating the absorption of B12 from food sources.

Can Vitamin B12 Deficiency Be Reversed?

While vitamin B12 deficiency is common, the good news is that it is reversible. While supplements are one option, making small changes in diet and lifestyle can help restore vitamin B12 levels. Dr. Batra suggests the following measures:

1. Include B12-rich foods in daily meals such as chicken, eggs, milk, fish, yogurt, and fermented foods.

2. Opt for supplements only if dietary intake is insufficient.

3. Reduce caffeine and alcohol consumption.

4. Take regular breaks at work and engage in light physical activity.

5. Manage stress through meditation and relaxation techniques.

6. Stay hydrated and maintain good gut health.

Get Checked Regularly

Experts recommend that individuals, particularly vegetarians, those experiencing chronic fatigue, or those with digestive issues, undergo an annual vitamin B12 test. Routine monitoring helps with early detection, allowing for timely intervention before the symptoms become severe.

With vitamin B12 deficiency becoming a silent health crisis among India’s corporate workforce, it is crucial to pay attention to early signs and make necessary lifestyle adjustments to ensure better overall health.
