Narayana Murthy Critiques AI Hype in India, Calls it “Silly, Old Programs”

By The Sampadak Express

In a candid remark at TiE Con Mumbai 2025, Infosys founder and tech mogul Narayana Murthy warned against the growing artificial intelligence (AI) trend in India, labeling most of it as “silly, old programs.” He criticized the exaggerated claims surrounding AI, which, according to him, have become a fashionable buzzword in the country.

Murthy shared his concerns about the way ordinary software is being marketed as AI simply because of the current AI craze. “It has become a trend in India to label everything as AI. I’ve seen several regular programs being touted as AI,” he stated, as reported by Moneycontrol.

Explaining AI’s Core Principles

During his speech, Murthy also took the opportunity to explain the fundamental principles of AI, specifically machine learning and deep learning, and their respective applications. He emphasized that machine learning is based on “large-scale correlation” and helps in making predictions through massive data sets. On the other hand, deep learning, which mimics the human brain, can tackle unsupervised algorithms by creating new branches or conditions in programs, making it more advanced.“

Unsupervised data, which uses deep learning and neural networks, has much greater potential to replicate human behavior,” Murthy explained.

AI’s Role in Job Creation and Elimination

Addressing concerns over AI replacing jobs, Murthy acknowledged that technological advancements often result in job displacement. However, he also emphasized that such innovations, if implemented wisely, could open up new opportunities.”

With every technological advancement, some jobs will be lost, but if used in an assisted manner, it can fuel economic growth,” he stated, referencing potential job creation in sectors like autonomous vehicles and hospital care.

Murthy concluded by noting that AI could lead to the expansion of businesses and the creation of new roles, provided it is applied strategically in industries such as transportation and healthcare.
