YouTuber and popular podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia has moved the Supreme Court seeking the clubbing of multiple FIRs filed against him in connection with allegedly obscene comments made during his guest appearance on the YouTube show India’s Got Latent. Allahbadia’s lawyer made the request during a brief mention in front of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna. The CJI responded by stating that the case would be listed for hearing in due course.
The controversy began when Allahbadia made an inappropriate remark to a contestant on the show, posing the question: “Watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life, or join in once and stop it forever?” This shocking comment quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from viewers and the public.
Following the public uproar, the Maharashtra Cyber Department took action by filing an FIR against Allahbadia, comedian Samay Raina, and other contributors to the India’s Got Latent YouTube show. The charges are based on the creation of obscene content that allegedly violated public decency standards. The Maharashtra police registered the case under various sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act and have called for the removal of all 18 episodes of the comedy show. The Cyber Department’s investigation revealed that several episodes featured “vulgar and obscene” language used by participants and other guests, leading to the legal action.
In addition to the FIR filed in Maharashtra, the Assam Police have issued fresh summons to Allahbadia and fellow YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani, both of whom were part of the panel during the controversial episode. On February 10, Guwahati Police filed an FIR against five YouTubers and content creators, including Allahbadia and Chanchlani, for promoting obscenity and engaging in vulgar and sexually explicit discussions during their appearance on India’s Got Latent. Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the filing of the FIR and expressed concern over the nature of the content.
In response to the backlash, Allahbadia posted a public apology on his social media platforms. He admitted to poor judgment in making the inappropriate joke and expressed regret for the hurt caused by his words. Allahbadia emphasized that it was never his intention to offend anyone, and he acknowledged the severity of the situation.
Comedian Samay Raina, who was also part of the controversial episode, decided to remove all the episodes of India’s Got Latent from his YouTube channel. The episodes, which had garnered millions of views, were deleted following the intense scrutiny surrounding the show. Raina took to his social media channels to explain that the recent developments had become overwhelming for him. He assured his followers that he would fully cooperate with the investigating authorities in the ongoing inquiry.
This controversy has sparked a broader debate about the responsibility of content creators on digital platforms, especially concerning sensitive issues like public decency, sexual content, and the impact of humor. As the case continues to unfold, authorities are expected to investigate further, and the legal outcomes for the involved YouTubers and creators remain uncertain.
