The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has surged ahead in the early trends as the counting of votes for the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections commenced on Saturday morning. According to initial reports, the BJP, led by JP Nadda, is currently leading in 44 seats, while the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) holds a lead in 25 seats, and the Congress has secured a lead in just one seat.
Key Races to Watch:
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, representing the AAP, is trailing behind BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri in the highly contested Kalkaji constituency. In another key race, BJP’s Parvesh Verma is leading in New Delhi, where he is up against AAP’s Chief Ministerial candidate Arvind Kejriwal.
The counting of votes began at 8 AM on Saturday across all 70 constituencies of the Delhi Assembly. The final results will be declared today, and the political landscape of the capital will be shaped by the outcomes.
BJP’s Ambition to Form Government:
The BJP has set its sights on ousting the AAP, which has been in power in Delhi for several terms. This election is crucial for the BJP, as they aim to dislodge the AAP, who has successfully maintained control of the Delhi government for the past several years. If the BJP manages to win, it would mark a significant shift in Delhi’s political dynamics, ending a long dominance of the AAP in the region.
AAP Seeks Re-election Victory:
On the other hand, the AAP is aiming to maintain its stronghold on Delhi’s political power. The party, which has been led by Arvind Kejriwal, has managed to secure overwhelming victories in the previous two elections. The AAP is hoping to continue its track record of securing a majority, despite the growing challenge posed by the BJP.
Congress’s Hopes for a Comeback:
The Congress party, which was in power in Delhi for three consecutive terms under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit until 2013, is hoping to make a comeback after a long period of electoral defeat. After failing to secure any seats in the 2015 and 2020 Delhi elections, the Congress is now looking for a redemption in this election. Early trends, however, show that the Congress is struggling to gain significant traction, with its lead restricted to just one seat at present.
What the Exit Polls Predicted:
In the run-up to the election results, several exit polls had forecast a win for the BJP, though there were varying predictions on the margin of victory.
The P-MARQ exit poll suggested that the BJP could win between 39-49 seats, with the AAP securing 21-31 seats and Congress winning 0-1 seats.
The Matrize exit poll indicated a tight contest, predicting the BJP would win 35-40 seats, the AAP would secure 32-37 seats, and Congress would get just one seat.
The Peoples Pulse exit poll was much more optimistic for the BJP, predicting a landslide victory, with the BJP securing 51-60 seats, the AAP winning 10-19 seats, and Congress not winning any seats.
The People’s Insight exit poll estimated that the BJP could secure 40-44 seats, while the AAP would win 25-29 seats, with Congress again securing 0-1 seats.
The WeePreside exit poll was among the few to project a favorable outcome for the AAP, predicting the party could win between 46-52 seats, while the BJP would secure 18-23 seats and Congress would win 0-1 seats.
Historical Context:
In the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, the AAP created history by securing an overwhelming 67 out of the 70 seats, a landslide victory that gave the party a near-total control of the Delhi legislature. In 2020, AAP repeated its success with 62 seats, further solidifying its dominance in the capital’s politics. However, the BJP has been gaining ground in recent years, and this election has seen a significant push to challenge the AAP’s continued control.
Stay Updated on the Election Results:
As the counting progresses, political analysts and voters are keenly watching how the numbers shift throughout the day. With the BJP hopeful of a breakthrough and the AAP striving for a third consecutive term, the final tally is expected to reveal whether Delhi will see a change in leadership or if the AAP will once again hold power.
