Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a judicial inquiry into the tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh, which claimed the lives of 30 people and left 60 others injured. The incident, which occurred during the ongoing religious festival, has raised serious concerns about crowd management and safety measures at such large-scale events.
In response to the tragedy, Adityanath announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for each of the families of the deceased. The chief minister expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and emphasized that a thorough investigation must be conducted to understand the exact causes that led to the deadly stampede.
A three-member inquiry panel has been set up, which will be led by retired judge Harsh Kumar. The panel will also include former Director General of Police (DGP) VK Gupta and retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer DK Singh. The team has been tasked with closely examining the circumstances that led to the disaster, including potential lapses in planning, crowd control, and safety protocols.
In addition to the judicial inquiry, Yogi Adityanath has instructed a separate police investigation to be carried out. The chief minister stressed the importance of uncovering the full details behind the tragedy to ensure such an incident does not occur again in the future. He remarked that the state government is committed to ensuring the safety of the devotees attending the event and is determined to hold those responsible accountable.
Addressing the issue emotionally, Adityanath said, “It is important to get to the bottom of the whole episode on how such a tragedy occurred.” He added that the Chief Secretary and DGP of Uttar Pradesh would visit the Maha Kumbh on Thursday for a more in-depth investigation into the incident.
The stampede occurred amidst the large crowds at the event, which has drawn millions of devotees to the banks of the Ganges in Prayagraj. As the authorities continue to investigate the causes, this tragedy has once again highlighted the challenges of managing public safety during large-scale religious and cultural gatherings.
The state government has assured that it will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of the pilgrims and prevent such incidents in the future.
