UP: Meerut Hospital Director and 5 Others Booked for Allegedly Removing Woman’s Kidney

Date:

A case has been filed against six individuals, including the director of a private hospital in Meerut, for allegedly removing a woman’s kidney during treatment in 2017. The woman, Kavita Devi, filed a court-ordered FIR claiming illegal organ trade.

According to Superintendent of Police Shankar Prasad, the complaint was lodged at Narsona police station on the court’s directive under Section 156. The FIR accuses Kavita Devi’s kidney of being removed during her treatment at the KMC Hospital in Meerut. An investigation is underway, and legal action will follow.

In her complaint, Kavita Devi described how she sought treatment for illness in 2017 at KMC Hospital. “The doctor suggested surgery to address internal health issues, which I underwent on May 20, 2017, and was discharged after four days. However, despite my condition not improving over the years, tests conducted in 2022 revealed that my left kidney was missing,” she stated.

Kavita Devi further alleged that hospital staff provided fake reports, showing both kidneys intact, and even confiscated her medical documents when she confronted them. She also claimed the hospital staff threatened both her and her husband, warning that they would be killed if they did not withdraw the case.

The FIR accuses Dr. Sunil Gupta, the director of KMC Hospital, and his wife, along with others, of being involved in the illegal trade of human organs. However, Dr. Gupta has denied the allegations, calling them baseless and without evidence.“

We have no discharge card or other proof to support these claims. This is an extortion attempt,” Dr. Gupta said, adding that an initial demand for ₹5 lakh later escalated to ₹12 lakh. He claimed that the woman filed the case after their refusal to comply.

Dr. Gupta also noted that the matter is currently being heard by the Ghaziabad Consumer Forum, with a hearing scheduled for March 21, 2025.

The police have filed charges under sections 120B (conspiracy), 326 (grievous hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 18 of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
