External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reassured the Indian diaspora in Spain that the government remains steadfast in addressing farmers’ concerns through discussions in both the Cabinet and Parliament.
During his interaction with the community, Jaishankar emphasized that the government’s recent move to increase Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for key rabi crops reflects its commitment to supporting farmers. He acknowledged that while the issue is often politicized, the government is focused on resolving it effectively.”
Regarding the issue of farmers, this is a complex topic with several layers. From the government’s side, I can assure you that we continuously discuss how to support our farmers in the Cabinet and Parliament,” Jaishankar said.
The Union Cabinet approved an increase in MSP for major rabi crops for the 2025-26 marketing season in October last year, with hikes ranging from 2.4% to 7%, set to take effect in April.”
While we have increased MSP, and the government is making significant efforts, this issue sometimes gets politicized. However, I assure you that the government will prioritize addressing it,” Jaishankar added.
This assurance comes at a time when farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike since November 26, continues to demand the fulfillment of promises made by the Central government during the 2021 farmers’ protests.
Dallewal, convener of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political), is calling for a legal guarantee of MSP for crops, among other demands. His deteriorating health has raised growing concerns among his supporters and the farmer community, with calls for intervention from the government.
Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh has also expressed alarm over Dallewal’s condition, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage in direct talks with the farmer leader. The Supreme Court-appointed high-powered committee has met with Dallewal, urging the Punjab government to ensure he receives proper medical care during his fast.
The Supreme Court continues to monitor the situation, pressing the state government to prioritize Dallewal’s health and well-being while he continues his fast-unto-death at the Khanouri border.
