As the Maha Kumbh Mela kicks off in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, millions of devotees have gathered, with an estimated 4 crore expected to take a holy dip over the next few days. The festival, a deeply significant event in Hinduism, is set to draw massive crowds, with authorities working to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims.
On January 13 and 14, it is anticipated that over 1 crore people will visit on Paush Purnima, while Makar Sankranti on January 14 could see as many as 3 crore devotees taking a dip in the sacred Sangam—the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

To manage the influx, the administration has implemented a robust seven-ring security plan, turning the mela area into a fortress. The entire area has been declared a “no vehicle zone,” with traffic diversions across all seven routes leading to the Sangam, as reported by the Times of India.
High-Tech Surveillance and Crowd Management
In a bid to enhance safety, authorities have set up an extensive surveillance network. Over 2,700 CCTV cameras, including 328 AI-powered units at key locations such as Sangam and the surrounding tent cities, will monitor the area. Additionally, AI-powered analytics systems will be used to improve crowd control and overall management.
Approximately 40,000 police personnel, including paramilitary forces and UP technical services teams, have been deployed across the mela grounds. IG (Prayagraj range) Prem Gautam emphasized that critical areas such as pandals, camps, and the Sanskriti Gram are under constant surveillance.
Advanced Drone Surveillance and Anti-Drone Technology
To ensure round-the-clock security, an anti-drone system has been activated, manned by skilled experts. Additionally, 20 high-tech drones will provide 24/7 aerial surveillance, covering all 25 sectors of the mela. These drones will deliver real-time data to support effective crowd and traffic management.

The Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) has been upgraded to manage information and enable quicker decision-making to maintain public safety.
Tents, Electricity, and Infrastructure for Millions of Devotees
In preparation for the massive turnout, the authorities have set up 150,000 tents to accommodate pilgrims. The mela will also see the allocation of 450,000 new electricity connections, with more than half already provided to support the event’s infrastructure.
A Gathering of Faith and Cultural Significance
The Kumbh Mela continues to attract not just Indian devotees but international figures as well. Among the notable personalities expected are actor Richard Gere, director David Lynch, and Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. The event’s cultural significance was recognized by UNESCO in 2017, when it was added to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Spiritual Importance of the Kumbh
Held every three years in one of four cities along India’s sacred rivers, the Kumbh Mela draws millions seeking spiritual purification. The “maha” Kumbh, which takes place once every 12 years, is considered especially auspicious and attracts the largest crowds. Devotees believe that bathing in the holy rivers during the mela washes away their sins and grants them liberation from the cycle of life and death.
With advanced security measures in place, the 2025 Maha Kumbh promises to be both a grand spiritual event and a model for crowd management on an unprecedented scale.
