In a significant operation, five terrorists were eliminated in an encounter with security forces in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. The clash, which began on Wednesday night, occurred after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Behibagh area of Kulgam, acting on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists.
The search operation turned into an intense gunfight when the terrorists opened fire on the security personnel, who swiftly retaliated. Two security forces personnel sustained injuries during the operation.
The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps confirmed the encounter, stating, “On December 19, based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in Kader, Kulgam. Suspicious activity was observed, and when challenged, the terrorists opened indiscriminate and heavy fire, to which our troops effectively retaliated.”
This operation comes in the wake of heightened security measures across Jammu and Kashmir, following recent incidents involving militants. Earlier in December, a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist, involved in a deadly attack on a tunnel construction site in Gagangeer, was killed in an encounter in Srinagar. The Gagangeer attack, which occurred in October, resulted in the tragic deaths of seven civilians.
Security forces have been intensifying operations to dismantle terror networks in the region, with recent operations also leading to the discovery of terror hideouts in Baramulla district in November.
The successful operation in Kulgam highlights the continued efforts of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in countering militancy and ensuring the safety of the region’s residents.
