Toyota Launches Ninth-Generation Camry in India at Rs 48 Lakh

Toyota has officially launched the ninth-generation Camry in India, priced at Rs 48 lakh (ex-showroom). This new iteration of the premium sedan, which debuted internationally over a year ago, continues to feature a fuel-efficient petrol-hybrid powertrain, one of its key highlights. Deliveries for the new Camry will begin immediately.

Price and Rivals

The ninth-gen Camry is priced at Rs 48 lakh, which is Rs 1.83 lakh more than its predecessor, which was priced at Rs 46.17 lakh. Despite this price increase, it remains significantly more affordable than its main competitor, the Skoda Superb, which is priced at Rs 54 lakh. The Camry also presents a more budget-friendly alternative to luxury sedans like the Audi A4 (Rs 46.02 lakh), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (Rs 54.40 lakh), and BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine (Rs 60.60 lakh).

Exterior and Platform

The new Camry is built on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform and features the brand’s signature “hammerhead” styling, which includes a sharp front end, slim LED headlights, and daytime running lights. A narrow grille nearly connects the headlights, and the ‘T’ logo has been repositioned higher. The car’s bumpers have an almost Lexus-like anvil shape. A bold character line along the side, redesigned 18-inch alloy wheels, and C-shaped LED tail lamps complete the exterior redesign.

Interior and Features

Inside, the Camry receives an updated dashboard layout featuring a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 12.3-inch touchscreen for infotainment. The system supports both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The sedan is equipped with a nine-speaker JBL sound system, a 10-inch head-up display, and digital key functionality for added convenience.

Rear-seat passengers are treated to reclining and ventilated seats with controls located in the rear center console. Other comfort features include heated and ventilated 10-way powered front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof with a retractable sunshade.

In terms of safety, the new Camry comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 suite, which includes features such as pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, radar-based cruise control, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, and automatic high beams. It also offers nine airbags, parking sensors at the front and rear, and a 360-degree camera for enhanced visibility.

Engine and Performance

Under the hood, the new Camry continues with a 2.5-liter petrol engine paired with Toyota’s fifth-generation Hybrid System (THS 5). This powertrain delivers a combined output of 230hp, which is an increase of 12hp over the previous model. Fuel efficiency has improved by around 30%. Like its predecessors, the Camry uses an eCVT (electronic continuously variable transmission) gearbox for smooth power delivery.

Manufacturing and Availability

Toyota has been assembling the Camry in India via the CKD (completely knocked down) route since the seventh generation was launched in 2013. The ninth-generation Camry will also be assembled at Toyota’s Bidadi plant in Karnataka.
