The ACC has named Shammi Silva as its new President, following Jay Shah’s transition to the role of ICC chairman

Date:

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has appointed Shammi Silva, the President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), as its new President, succeeding Jay Shah, who has moved on to take up the role of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Silva’s appointment marks a significant turning point for the ACC, which is at a crucial stage of development in Asian cricket.

Jay Shah, who had served three terms as ACC President, stepped down from his position after assuming his new responsibilities with the ICC. During his tenure, the ACC reached notable milestones, particularly securing record-breaking commercial rights valuations for the Asia Cup tournaments from 2024 to 2031, which bolstered the ACC’s growing influence on the global cricket stage.

Silva, who was re-elected as President of SLC for a third consecutive term in May 2023, brings a wealth of experience in cricket administration. He has previously served as Chairman of the ACC Finance & Marketing Committee and is a member of the ICC Audit Committee. His extensive involvement in cricket governance has earned him considerable respect within the international cricketing community.

With a background as a former Colombo Cricket Club player and a former manager and coach for Sri Lanka’s national squash team, Silva has deep roots in the sports world. His diverse experience reflects his dedication to promoting excellence in both cricket and other sports in Sri Lanka and beyond.

Silva takes the helm of the ACC at a time when Asian cricket is primed for further expansion. His appointment aligns with the ACC’s strategic goals of enhancing regional tournaments, strengthening cricketing infrastructure, and nurturing emerging talent across member nations.

Recently, Silva represented Sri Lanka at the ICC Board and engaged in discussions with global cricket leaders, including a meeting with Jay Shah in Dubai. These interactions highlight Silva’s active role in shaping the future of cricket at both regional and global levels.

As the new ACC President, Silva is expected to build on Jay Shah’s achievements while navigating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Asian cricket. His leadership comes at a pivotal time as the ACC looks towards the upcoming Asia Cup and aims to further establish Asia’s prominence in the global cricketing landscape.
