CM Yogi Links Violence to ‘Mughal’ Mindset, Stirs Controversy with ‘Sambhal, Bangladesh… Same DNA’ Comment

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sparked controversy with his remarks comparing recent events in Bangladesh to the actions of Mughal ruler Babur’s army in Ayodhya and Sambhal. The comments were made during the inauguration of the 43rd Ramayan Mela in Ayodhya, where Adityanath also invoked Lord Ram’s legacy of societal unity.

In his speech, the BJP leader lamented the history of divisions in India, stating, “Had we prioritised unity and thwarted the strategies of our enemies to create social discord, this country would never have been enslaved. Our holy sites would have remained untouched, and a handful of invaders would never have dared to challenge our brave soldiers.”

Adityanath then criticized individuals and groups whom he claimed were sowing division in society, likening them to historical invaders and political opponents. He argued, “The nature and DNA of these divisive elements remain the same today as they were 500 years ago.”

He also linked the recent violence in Sambhal and the unrest in Bangladesh, saying, “Whether it was Babur’s general in Ayodhya and Sambhal 500 years ago, or what is happening in Bangladesh today, their mindset is identical. Those who think otherwise are mistaken.”

The Chief Minister further alleged that divisive forces in India were accumulating wealth and properties abroad, leaving ordinary citizens to face the consequences during times of crisis.

Opposition Condemns Remarks

Adityanath’s remarks triggered strong criticism from opposition parties. Congress MP Tariq Anwar condemned the Chief Minister’s language, calling it divisive and inflammatory. “It is shocking to see such a senior BJP leader and Chief Minister speaking in a manner that deepens societal rifts,” Anwar said.

The Sambhal Incident

Sambhal, a district in Uttar Pradesh, has been at the center of communal tension following a court-ordered Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey of a mosque alleged to have been built on the site of a Harihar temple. The violence in the area last month led to the deaths of four Muslim men. Authorities in Sambhal have identified over 400 individuals linked to the unrest, with 32 arrests made so far.

Unrest in Bangladesh

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has been experiencing political turmoil since the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in August, following protests by students. The unrest has been further exacerbated by demonstrations in Dhaka over alleged atrocities against Hindus and other minorities. Protesters are also demanding the release of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, who faces sedition charges, fueling tensions in the region. The situation remains precarious for minorities in Bangladesh, drawing international concern.

By drawing parallels between historical invasions and current events, Yogi Adityanath’s comments have once again brought him into the spotlight, igniting debates over his polarizing rhetoric and its potential impact on social harmony in India.
