In a remarkable turn of events at the IPL mega auction held in Jeddah on Monday, November 25, 2024, 13-year-old cricket prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi secured a ₹1.10 crore contract with Rajasthan Royals.
Suryavanshi, who has quickly become a sensation in Indian cricket, made his T20 debut for Bihar in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Rajasthan on Saturday, where he scored a quickfire 13 runs off 6 balls before being dismissed by Deepak Chahar.
Hailing from Samastipur, Bihar, Suryavanshi’s rise in cricket has been nothing short of extraordinary. He made his debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at just 12 years and 284 days, becoming the youngest player ever to feature in the tournament. This feat broke records held by cricketing giants like Yuvraj Singh, who debuted at 15 years and 57 days, and Sachin Tendulkar, who started at 15 years and 230 days.
Suryavanshi further cemented his reputation as a future star during the Youth Test series against Australia in Chennai, where he played an explosive knock of 104 runs off just 62 balls. At just 13 years and 188 days, he became the youngest centurion in the 170-year history of competitive cricket, and his blazing century off 58 balls also made him the second-fastest centurion at the youth level, trailing only England’s Moeen Ali, who achieved the feat in 56 balls.
While Suryavanshi’s star continues to rise, some big names were left unsold in the auction. The Mumbai trio of Shardul Thakur, Prithvi Shaw, and Ajinkya Rahane, alongside New Zealand stars Kane Williamson and Glenn Phillips, did not find a place in any IPL team for the 2024 season.
