Manipur crisis; Centre To Deploy 90 More CAPF Companies to maintain peace, says state security advisor

Date:

The Central Government has announced the deployment of an additional 90 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to Manipur, bringing the total force presence in the violence-hit state to 288 companies. This move comes in response to the ongoing ethnic unrest that has claimed 258 lives since May of last year.

Kuldiep Singh, the state security advisor, confirmed this development following a high-level security review meeting. Attendees included officials from the Army, Police, CRPF, BSF, and ITBP, along with District Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) from all districts, as they discussed the current security situation. Singh emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address the challenges and maintain peace.“

We are receiving 90 additional companies, in addition to the 198 companies already deployed. A significant portion of the new deployment has already reached Imphal,” Singh stated.

Singh also reported significant progress in security efforts, including the arrest of 32 individuals involved in the vandalism and arson of properties belonging to ministers and MLAs. Additionally, around 3,000 looted weapons have been recovered.

In related news, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the recent looting of properties belonging to ministers and MLAs during protests on November 16. The CM revealed that suspects involved in these criminal activities have been identified through CCTV footage, and legal actions are being pursued. He expressed regret over the violent acts, noting, “It is shameful to see such incidents unfold in Manipur.”

The CM also highlighted a critical incident on November 11 in which CRPF forces prevented a major attack in Jiribam. According to Singh, if the forces had not intervened, militants would have overrun a relief camp in Borobekra and a nearby police station, potentially resulting in the deaths of around 100 civilians.

The increased deployment of CAPF personnel aims to restore peace and stability in the state as the government continues its efforts to address the ethnic violence and secure vulnerable areas.
