PM Modi addressed Guyana’s National Assembly: ‘Democracy is in Our DNA, We Never moved with Expansionist Vision’

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday stressed the importance of global cooperation, urging nations to move away from conflict in favor of unity. Addressing a special session of the Parliament of Guyana in Georgetown, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to supporting nations in need, citing India’s tradition of selfless assistance.”

Whether it was Sri Lanka, the Maldives, or any country facing a crisis, India has always offered help without selfish motives,” said Modi. “From Nepal to Türkiye to Syria, India has consistently acted as a first responder in times of disaster. This is our tradition. We do not believe in expansionism. ‘Space and sea’ should be areas of cooperation, not conflict. The world is no longer in an era of conflict.”

Modi also emphasized India’s foreign policy, saying that the country has never pursued expansionist ambitions nor sought to seize resources. “Humanity first guides India’s decision-making,” he said, adding, “In the spirit of ‘democracy first, humanity first,’ India is fulfilling its duty as a ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ (world friend).”

The Prime Minister highlighted the significance of democracy in fostering an inclusive society, stating, “For the formation of an inclusive society, there is no greater medium than democracy. Both India and Guyana have shown that democracy is not just a system; it is in our DNA, vision, conduct, and behavior.”

Reflecting on the shared history of both nations, Modi noted the similarities in their struggles for freedom. “Over the past 200-250 years, India and Guyana have experienced similar forms of slavery and hardship. Many people sacrificed their lives in both nations during the fight for independence. Today, both countries are strengthening democracy worldwide,” he said.

As part of his visit, Modi was honored with Guyana’s highest national award, The Order of Excellence, recognizing his contributions to fostering stronger bilateral ties.

In his address, the Prime Minister also praised Guyana’s partnership with India, stating, “We see island nations not as small countries, but as large ocean countries,” underscoring the importance of mutual respect and collaboration between nations, regardless of their size.

Modi’s remarks in Georgetown reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting global peace and cooperation, while reinforcing the shared democratic values between India and Guyana.
