On November 4, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the violence that erupted at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, near Toronto, calling it a deliberate attack that would not weaken India’s resolve. His remarks come amid escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, following recent incidents involving surveillance of Indian diplomats in Canada, which Modi described as “cowardly.”
The Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern for the safety of Indian nationals in Canada, coinciding with reports of anti-India protests that turned violent at the temple, which was hosting a consular camp for Indian citizens. Modi emphasized that the Indian government expects the Canadian authorities to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law in response to these events.“
We strongly condemn the attack on a Hindu temple and the intimidation of our diplomats,” Modi stated, urging the Canadian government to protect all places of worship from such violence. The incident occurred when a pro-Khalistan group clashed with attendees at the temple, leading to confrontations during the Indian High Commission’s consular camp.

The Indian High Commission successfully issued over 1,000 life certificates during the camp despite the unrest. In a response to the violence, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the actions, affirming that every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely. He pledged a thorough investigation into the incident.
Chandra Arya, a Member of Parliament, also condemned the violence, suggesting it highlights the growing issue of Khalistani extremism in Canada and raised concerns about potential infiltration into law enforcement. He urged the Hindu-Canadian community to assert their rights and hold political leaders accountable.
The incident marks a further escalation in tensions between India and Canada, following Canadian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison’s controversial claims that Indian Home Minister Amit Shah was involved in a plot against Canadian citizens. India swiftly dismissed these allegations as “absurd and baseless.”
The deteriorating relations, which began in September 2023 following Prime Minister Trudeau’s accusations of Indian involvement in the killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, have seen a series of diplomatic spats, raising concerns about the safety of Indian diplomats and nationals in Canada.
