A bus fell into a 200-foot gorge in Almora, Uttarakhand, killing 28 people and injuring many others

A devastating bus accident occurred on Monday near Kupi in Uttarakhand, resulting in at least 28 fatalities after a Garwal Motors Users’ bus plunged into a 200-meter deep gorge. The incident took place at Marchula, situated at the Pauri-Almora border, as the bus was en route from Garhwal to Kumaon.

District Magistrate Alok Kumar Pandey reported that while seven deaths have been confirmed thus far, the toll may increase due to the presence of approximately 40 passengers on board at the time of the accident. Emergency responders, including local police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, swiftly arrived at the scene to commence search and rescue operations.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. He took to social media platform X to convey his condolences, stating, “I received very sad news regarding the casualties of passengers in the unfortunate bus accident that took place in Marchula, Almora district.” He has directed the district administration to expedite relief and rescue efforts.

The local authorities are actively working to evacuate the injured and transport them to the nearest healthcare facilities for urgent medical attention. CM Dhami has also instructed that seriously injured passengers may be airlifted if necessary, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Search operations are ongoing as teams continue to assess the area for any additional casualties or survivors. The community is mourning this tragic event as families await news of their loved ones. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
