In a significant security operation, Indian Army personnel successfully thwarted a militant attack in the Sunderbani Sector of Jammu on Monday morning. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. when a group of militants targeted an Army ambulance.
According to an Army spokesperson based in Jammu, the terrorists opened fire on a convoy near Asan, specifically aimed at Army vehicles. Prompt and effective retaliation from the troops helped to neutralize the attack, ensuring there were no injuries among Army personnel. Following the attack, the area was quickly cordoned off, and a search operation was initiated to locate the assailants.
Reports indicate that the group of militants comprised two to three individuals, who managed to escape towards a nearby forest. Security forces suspect these militants are part of a newly infiltrated group that crossed the Line of Control, located approximately two kilometers from the encounter site. To enhance operational effectiveness, a special team of National Security Guard (NSG) commandos has been deployed alongside regular troops to locate and neutralize the fleeing militants.
As the operation progressed, one terrorist was confirmed killed, and a cache of war-like stores was recovered from the site. In a poignant note, the Army reported that a trained dog named Phantom, who was part of the operation, tragically lost its life after drawing enemy fire, sustaining fatal injuries.
This incident marks the fourth militant attack in Jammu and Kashmir this month, with earlier assaults resulting in the deaths of ten civilians and two soldiers in the Kashmir Valley. These developments have raised serious concerns regarding security in the region.
In response to the escalating threat, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha held a review meeting concerning the effectiveness of the security apparatus. He emphasized the need for proactive measures to address potential terrorist threats. Sinha stated, “We must safeguard peace and the pace of development. At the same time, the strongest possible actions need to be taken against terrorists and those providing support or safe haven to them. Our aim is to ensure socio-economic development while promoting a sense of security among the people.”
The ongoing security operations highlight the persistent challenges faced by security forces in the region, as they strive to maintain peace and counter the threat posed by militant activities.
