India has criticized Pakistan for “mischievous provocation” and “political propaganda” following Islamabad’s remarks on Kashmir during a recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador P. Harish, described Pakistan’s actions as part of a longstanding strategy of spreading misinformation.
In response to Pakistan during the UNSC Open Debate on “Women Building Peace in a Changing Environment,” Harish emphasized that it was inappropriate to raise such political issues in a significant forum. He also highlighted the dire situation for women from minority communities in Pakistan, noting that approximately a thousand women from these groups, including Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians, are victims of abduction, forced conversions, and marriages each year, according to the Pakistan Human Rights Commission.
This exchange follows Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s previous comments at the UN General Assembly, where he called for India to reverse the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, likening their struggle for self-determination to that of the Palestinian people.
The First Secretary of India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Bhavika Mangalanandan, condemned Pakistan’s position, accusing it of hypocrisy given its own record on terrorism and political repression.
She noted that a nation with a military-led government and a history of rigged elections has no right to criticize the world’s largest democracy. Mangalanandan also referenced the terrorism faced by India from Pakistan-sponsored groups, emphasizing the irony in Pakistan’s criticisms.
