The auspicious Hindu festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated on October 20 this year. On this day, married women observe a nirjala vrat (fast without water) for the long life and prosperity of their husbands. Women dress in traditional Indian attire, adorn themselves with sola shringar, and apply mehndi on their hands. In the evening, many gather to narrate the Karwa Chauth Katha.

The Legend of Veeravati

One of the most notable stories associated with Karwa Chauth is that of Queen Veeravati. Deeply in love with her husband and the only sister among seven brothers, Veeravati decided to observe a nirjala vrat for her husband’s well-being. Unfortunately, she fainted from hunger. Her brothers, unable to watch her suffer, urged her to eat. Despite their pleas, she held firm, waiting for the moon to rise.

In a desperate attempt to help her break her fast, her brothers created a fake moon by holding a flame behind a sieve. Convinced it was time, Veeravati ate, only to learn of her husband’s demise shortly thereafter. Heartbroken, she cried out, and Goddess Indrani appeared, offering a path to revive him through a year of monthly fasting. Following the goddess’s guidance, Veeravati prayed diligently, and her devotion was rewarded when Yama, the god of death, restored her husband to life.

The Story of Karwa Devi

Another significant tale is that of Karwa Devi, whose husband was attacked by a crocodile while bathing. Displaying immense bravery, Karwa saved her husband but faced Yama, who came to claim him. Refusing to let her husband go, her dedication moved Yama, who granted her a blessing to extend his life.

The Tale of Savitri

The festival also recalls the story of Princess Savitri, who married Prince Satyavan, foreseen to die within a year. Undeterred by fate, Savitri performed rigorous penance to save her husband, successfully persuading Yama to restore his life.

The Mahabharata Connection

Another legend from the Mahabharata era involves Draupadi. Concerned for her husband Arjuna during his meditation in the Nilgiri mountains, Draupadi sought Lord Krishna’s help. He advised her to fast for Arjuna’s safety, mirroring Goddess Parvati’s devotion to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Draupadi’s unwavering love and fast contributed to the Pandavas’ victory in the war.

Karwa Chauth, also known as Karaka Chaturthi, derives its name from Karwa (earthen pots) and Chauth (fourth day of the lunar month). This year, the festival will be observed on Sunday, October 20.

Pre-Fast Preparation

Begin your day with mindfulness practices such as deep breathing or meditation. This helps mentally prepare you for the day ahead. Avoid strenuous activities to conserve energy throughout the fast. Keep your routine light and simple. Focus on foods that provide sustained energy. Nutritionists recommends Five soaked almonds, two dates, and a bowl of vegetable oats porridge. Chia seed pudding with Greek yogurt, fresh fruit slices, nuts, and dried fruits. Registered dietitian Deepalakshmi suggests opting for a balanced meal before the fast. Whole grains like roti or chapati, paired with protein-rich foods such as thick dal, paneer, or curd, will provide lasting energy. Including millets in your meal is also beneficial. Staying hydrated before the fast is crucial. Drink coconut water, buttermilk, or plain water to help avoid dehydration during the day.

    Post-Fast Rehydration

    Once the fast concludes, rehydrating should be your first priority. Start with: Plain water, coconut water, or lemon water. After rehydrating, opt for a light, easy-to-digest meal. Nutritionists recommends Smaller portions that include a balanced mix of whole grains, protein, and healthy fats. Options like lentil soup, khichdi, roti with curd or paneer, or dal served with fruits like papaya and watermelon are excellent choices.

    Foods to Avoid

    After breaking your fast, steer clear of Sugary, Salty, or Spicy Foods: These can lead to digestive issues such as acidity. Also avoid tea or coffee, as they can dehydrate your body.

    Instead, choose light snacks such as boiled corn, roasted makhana, or sprouts chaat. For dessert, consider small portions of low-fat kheer or date-and-nut laddoos made with jaggery. For a calming effect, substitute regular tea with chamomile tea.
