The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced it will independently contest the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, taking a stand against the “overconfident” Congress and the “arrogant” BJP. AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar made the statement on Wednesday, following the Congress’s disappointing performance in the recent Haryana elections.
Kakkar emphasized AAP’s readiness to face both major parties alone, citing Congress’s failure to value its allies. She pointed to their recent defeat in Haryana, where the Congress managed to secure only 37 seats, compared to the BJP’s 48, despite a similar vote share. “In Delhi, AAP will contest alone. We are capable of fighting the overconfident Congress and arrogant BJP,” she said.
Kakkar highlighted the Congress’s lack of seats in the Delhi assembly over the past decade, noting that despite AAP’s support in the Lok Sabha elections, where Congress received three seats, they chose not to collaborate in Haryana. She accused the Congress of undermining the efforts of the INDIA bloc to form a coalition, claiming they did not see the need to involve their allies.
The Congress’s poor performance in Haryana, where AAP failed to win any seats, was attributed to a more polarized electoral landscape, with an HT analysis revealing that Congress lost 17 seats due to competing candidates acting as spoilers. While the BJP also faced setbacks, Congress’s larger number of losses indicated it had more opportunities to succeed.
As the elections approach, AAP is firm in its decision to go solo, asserting its capability to challenge both the Congress and BJP without alliances.
