In response to the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election results, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti cautioned the Centre against interfering in the future National Conference government. She emphasized that the poll outcomes reflect the people’s desire to avoid “horse-trading” and warned that any meddling by the BJP-led government could have disastrous consequences. “If they do that, it will be worse than what has happened to them now,” she stated.
Mufti highlighted that the electorate’s choice of the National Conference-Congress alliance signals a demand for stability and a concerted effort to challenge the BJP’s influence in the region. “The people of J-K are wise and clever, and they do not want any horse-trading by the Centre,” she added.
While the PDP secured only three seats in this election, a significant drop from 28 in 2014, Mufti asserted her party’s role as a constructive opposition. “We are not at a low. We are fighting everywhere. Who is challenging the NC? It is the PDP,” she remarked, reaffirming the party’s presence in the political landscape.
She congratulated the National Conference leadership on their victory, commending the electorate for opting for a stable government rather than a hung assembly. “A strong government is crucial for resolving the issues faced by the people, especially since August 5, 2019,” Mufti noted, stressing the importance of a clear mandate to prevent any potential misadventures.
In the election, the National Conference won 42 seats, the Congress secured 6, and the BJP claimed 29 seats.
