Haryana Assembly Election 2024: Voter Turnout Reaches 36.69% by 1 PM

Date:

Voting for the Haryana Assembly elections is ongoing today, with all 90 seats contested in a single-phase election. Over 2 crore voters are participating in this pivotal election, marking an intriguing contest between major political parties.

The ruling BJP is vying for a third consecutive term, while the Congress is eager to reclaim power after an extended absence. Candidates from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) are also in the fray, with their fates set to be determined by the electronic voting machines (EVMs).

As of 1 PM, voter turnout stands at 36.69% across all 90 constituencies. BJP candidate Anil Vij, former Home Minister of Haryana and representative from Ambala Cantt, expressed confidence that the BJP will secure victory again, suggesting that future meetings could take place at the Chief Minister’s residence if desired.

In a notable development, the BJP expelled Savitri Jindal, the mother of Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal, from the party. She is contesting as an independent candidate from Hisar.

This election features 20,629 polling stations set up to facilitate the voting process. Among the prominent candidates, Congress has nominated wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who narrowly missed out on a gold medal at the Paris Olympics, from the Julana constituency. Additionally, just days before the election, senior BJP leader Ashok Tanwar switched allegiance to the Congress party.

The Election Commission has made all necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of voting, which began at 7 AM and will continue until 6 PM. As the polling unfolds, the political landscape of Haryana hangs in the balance.
