A 55-year-old doctor was shot dead at a private nursing home in Delhi’s Jaitpur on Wednesday night, sparking outrage and concern in the community. This incident follows closely on the heels of the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital less than two months ago.
The deceased, identified as Dr. Javed Akhtar, was a practitioner of Unani Medicine. According to staff at Nima Hospital, two men entered the facility late at night, with one requesting a change of bandage for an injured toe. The individual had been treated at the hospital the previous evening. After the bandaging was completed, the men asked for a prescription and proceeded to Dr. Akhtar’s cabin.
Minutes later, nurses Gajala Parveen and Md Kamil reported hearing a gunshot. They rushed to the doctor’s cabin, where they found him bleeding from the head.
Hospital staff indicated that the suspects appeared to be around 16 or 17 years old. The police have described the incident as a targeted killing, suggesting that the assailants may have conducted reconnaissance during their earlier visit.
Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage from inside the hospital to identify the suspects and gather further evidence related to the crime. The shocking murder has raised serious questions about safety in medical facilities and has prompted an urgent investigation by law enforcement.
