Mumbai on red alert: Schools,Colleges remain sut on Sept 26; Flight,Train Services Disrupted

Date:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for severe thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall expected on Wednesday evening across several districts in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Palghar, and Satara. Gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 km/h are anticipated in isolated areas, prompting the IMD to advise residents to take necessary precautions.

Adverse weather conditions have already affected flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. An Indigo flight had to abort its landing due to wind shear, diverting to Ahmedabad. As of 8:09 PM, reports indicated seven go-arounds and two diversions, with further disruptions likely as conditions deteriorate. SpiceJet has informed passengers that both departures and arrivals at Mumbai airport may face delays due to the heavy rain, urging them to check their flight status online.

The torrential rain has also severely impacted Mumbai’s suburban train network. Rail tracks at Kurla, Bhandup, and Vikhroli are submerged, resulting in delays of up to an hour on the Central Railway (CR) line. Trains will not be halting at Nahur, Kanjurmarg, and Vidyavihar stations, exacerbating travel difficulties for commuters. The western line has begun experiencing cancellations, leading to overcrowding at key stations like Churchgate.

In response to the IMD’s forecast, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has announced that all schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed on Thursday. Rainfall is expected to range between 64.5 mm and 204.4 mm, with some areas potentially exceeding 204.5 mm.

Thunderstorms, along with gusty winds, are expected to persist as a trough extending from North Konkan to South Bangladesh interacts with a cyclonic circulation over South Chhattisgarh, intensifying the weather conditions.

Residents are urged to stay informed and prioritize safety as the situation develops.
