Udaipur: Udaipur witnessed a surge of communal violence on Friday, prompting authorities to suspend internet services across the city for 24 hours and impose prohibitory orders banning the assembly of people. The unrest, which began after a violent altercation between two students, quickly escalated, leading to widespread tension in the city.
Violence and Vandalism Grip Udaipur
The situation turned volatile when a mob began pelting stones and setting vehicles on fire. According to police reports, three to four cars were torched as chaos spread across several parts of Udaipur. By evening, major marketplaces such as Bapu Bazar, Hathipole, Ghanta Ghar, and Chetak Circle had shut down amid the rising tension.
A shopping mall in the city also came under attack, with stones being hurled at its glass doors, causing significant damage. Hundreds of people gathered outside the government hospital, but police swiftly dispersed the crowd to prevent further escalation.
Trigger: Stabbing Incident at Government School
The violence was sparked by an incident earlier in the day at a government school, where a Class 10 student was allegedly attacked with a knife by a classmate. The victim sustained deep wounds on his thighs and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Udaipur District Collector Arvind Poswal confirmed the details, stating, “This incident took place in the early hours today. The injured child is in stable condition, and the police are investigating the motive behind the attack.”
Collector Poswal also urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading or believing in rumors. He confirmed that the student who committed the stabbing, along with his father, has been arrested.
Protests and Police Response
Following the stabbing incident, members of several Hindu outfits gathered in the Madhuban area of Udaipur to protest, which quickly escalated into violent clashes. In response, the administration deployed a significant police force throughout the city, with all officers on high alert.
A high-level meeting was convened to address the situation, attended by Divisional Commissioner Rajendra Bhatt, Collector Arvind Poswal, SP Yogesh Goyal, Rajya Sabha MP Chunnilal Garasia, Lok Sabha MP Mannalal Rawat, MLAs Tarachand Jain, Phool Singh Meena, and other public representatives. The officials are closely monitoring the situation to restore peace in the city.
As the situation remains tense, authorities continue to urge citizens to refrain from spreading misinformation and to cooperate with law enforcement efforts.
