Displaced woman speaks of ‘death and horror’ in Gaza refugee camp as fighting rages nearby
From Abdel Kader Al Sabah of Jabalya
A displaced woman speaks to CNN about dire conditions in the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, after Israeli forces heavily shelled the area and engaged in fresh fighting with Palestinian militants.
“As you can see, it’s death and fear. We wake up scared and we go to bed scared,” Ibtisam Abu Abeid told CNN on Friday.
“Our house is gone. The four-story building where I and my children live is gone,” she said of her home in the nearby city of Beit Hanoun.
She has been evacuated again from the eastern part of the camp and is currently staying in a destroyed shelter in central Jabaliya. Abu Abeid said she does not have access to a toilet or proper shelter, and water supplies are in short supply.
The Israeli military announced Saturday that its forces had killed Palestinian militants in multiple battles in Jabaliya. CNN footage from near the scene shows a massive explosion, and the sounds of artillery, gunfire and drones can be heard everywhere.
Rescue workers pull the body from the rubble. Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for the Gaza Civil Defense Emergency Service, said around 300 homes were completely destroyed in seven days during the Israeli military invasion of Jabaliya.
Bassal’s team recovered at least 150 bodies and rescued hundreds of injured people from refugee camps last week, he told CNN on Saturday.
He warned that many bodies remain under the rubble because civil defense teams are unable to reach or dig them out. Vassar said the fires in Israel have made first response teams afraid to approach certain areas, even as they seek help from the public.
CNN’s Sara El Shirghany contributed reporting to this post.
