A 21-year-old woman was severely injured in an acid attack allegedly carried out by a former friend in the Awadhpuri Colony area under Gaurighat police station limits late Sunday night. The victim, identified as Shraddha Das, sustained nearly 50% burn injuries and is currently being treated at a private hospital. Doctors have confirmed that her condition is stable.

The accused, 22-year-old Ishita Sahu, has been taken into police custody, while her parents are reportedly absconding.

Lured Outside with a “Surprise”According to police sources, the attack took place around 10:30 PM. Ishita Sahu allegedly visited Shraddha’s home and asked her to come outside. Shraddha initially declined, mentioning she had an exam the next day. However, Ishita insisted, claiming she had a “surprise” for her.

As per the family, the two had a brief conversation outside. When Shraddha turned to go back inside, Ishita reportedly threw acid on her. Shraddha’s mother rushed out upon hearing her screams and found her clothes melted and body burned. The family immediately tried to alleviate the burns with water before rushing her to the hospital.

Motive: Jealousy and Past Grudges

Shraddha’s family believes the motive behind the attack was jealousy. According to her mother, the two women had been friends for years, since their families settled in the same colony in 2013–14. However, their friendship had soured nearly a year ago, and Shraddha had severed all communication with Ishita, even blocking her number two months back.“

Ishita couldn’t tolerate Shraddha’s success her comfort, ambition, and stability,” alleged the victim’s mother. She also claimed that Ishita’s mother had recently reached out, urging Shraddha to speak with her daughter again, to which Shraddha had replied, “I work three jobs. I’ll talk if I get time.”The family also accused Ishita’s mother of being involved in the planning of the attack.

Investigation Underway

Police confirmed that Ishita has been arrested and is being interrogated. Her house was found locked, and efforts are ongoing to locate her absconding parents. Investigators are currently verifying all claims and recording statements from the victim and her family as part of the probe.

Authorities said further legal action will follow based on the results of the ongoing investigation.

This incident once again brings to light the alarming rise in acid attacks and the urgent need for stronger preventive measures and swift justice for survivors.
