In a shocking incident, a law student was allegedly gang-raped on the campus of a law college in South Kolkata, prompting swift police action. Three individuals, including a former student of the institution, have been arrested in connection with the case, police confirmed on Thursday.

According to officials, the assault reportedly occurred on June 25. “A case has been registered based on the complaint filed by the survivor. An investigation is underway,” said a senior officer from Kolkata Police. The accused are set to be produced in court on Friday.

The incident has triggered a political uproar, with Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari criticising the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). “There is no safety for women in this state. Just last year, a junior doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College. The chief minister will again call it a small incident and offer compensation. She must resign,” he said.

In response, TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar condemned the politicisation of the issue. “This is a deeply unfortunate incident. Instead of politicising it, we must stand united against such heinous crimes,” he said.

This incident comes months after a similar tragedy, when a post-graduate medical trainee was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College, also in Kolkata, sparking outrage across the state.

Police continue to investigate the latest case, and security measures on campuses are expected to come under fresh scrutiny.
