A mathematics teacher at a government school in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district has been arrested following serious allegations of sexually harassing 24 girl students. The incident came to light during a ‘Shiksha Samvad’ programme, where students from classes VIII to X bravely voiced their concerns before the school authorities.
The accused, a trained graduate teacher, has been taken into three-day police custody after a case was registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
According to reports, the students submitted a written complaint alleging inappropriate physical contact by the teacher. Following this, school authorities informed the parents, many of whom were unaware of the ordeal faced by their children. Outraged, the parents staged protests and demanded strict action against both the teacher and the school administration.
The teacher has been suspended, and a departmental inquiry is underway. Taking cognizance of the matter, the Director of School Education has directed the Deputy Director of Elementary Education, Sirmaur, to personally visit the school, interact with students and staff, and submit a detailed report within a week.
Additional Superintendent of Police Yogesh Rolta confirmed that the investigation is being treated with utmost seriousness. “Statements have been recorded and a site inspection has been completed. Further proceedings are underway,” he stated.
The accused was presented before a local court on Sunday and remanded to police custody for further interrogation. Authorities have assured strict action based on the findings of the ongoing probe.
